committing to a vision

so many versions

i have a new song with cyn coming out this friday. you can hear a preview here. this song has been through many versions. an absolute fuck-ton really. we wrote the first version of this song in 2022. i was in what i would call “discovery mode” at that time. just trying some random production ideas that felt inspiring at the time. some tame impala style drums, mixing in some disco influences. it was fun, it was challenging, but there was something missing.

sometimes i can work on songs and know, “technically this works, but does it make me excited?” i think the latter part of that question is where the magic happens. the 2022 version of this record felt like that to me, i knew there was goodness in this record, but it wasn’t being showcased in the way i wanted.

i guess that’s what music production is at the end of the day, finding the gold in a lyric, a vocal, a melody, and then building a world around it to best showcase that to the world. production often feels like another way of saying presentation. i’m sure there’s lots of great songs that have suffered because they had the wrong production and lots of extremely mid songs that have flourished because the production saved it.

i had a breakthrough with this track around the end of 2023… i really just wanted something that is fun to play in the club. simple. with a lot of my sunset mixes, i’d be making club versions of my tracks after the fact and i think this time around i wanted to start making the originals serve that purpose. a dance producer making dance records? who woulda thought.

i’m very proud of this record. it fucking RATTLES in the club and i love it.

cyn killed it, the lyrics are cheeky and fun.

we even snuck in a simpsons reference, that you’ll hear friday.

this is part of chapter i. the first of a few chapters of music i’m releasing this year.

sign up here to pre-save and you won’t miss any of the music i’m dropping.

thanks for reading,
