disconnecting aka reconnecting
i’ve been roaming japan for the past week on airplane mode. the wifi only really happens in my hotel or an occasional cafe. i was sort of longing for a time of travelling overseas pre-smart phone when data plans were too expensive to justify — a chance to disconnect. mix that in with an opposite time zone to your hometown and the distractions become minimal (or at least you find new distractions.)
i don’t think i’m trying to recreate a glory day, for i feel that is a fruitless endeavour. i think it’s more-so an attempt to regain control of my life. i feel if my surroundings create an opportunity to value time in a different way, maybe that will seep into other parts of my life. i ended the day at a bar in a small alley of kyoto. i was the only one in there chatting with the bartender’s broken english. we talked about good food (local crab), skiing, and complimented each other on how canadians and japanese were both friendly. there was no wifi. it was nice.
