for the love of the album
i was listening to the new 070 shake album the other day. i really like it. it felt very conceptual — which i like when done right and hate when done wrong. (but hey isn’t that everything?)
the concept of the album feels like this separation between “the industry” and “the artist.” anyone who works in the industry and isn’t an artist will probably advise against the album. “you waste songs.” “people only stream singles.” “people only listen to playlists now.” whatever the excuse, there’s always a data-driven excuse that i can’t argue against.
the point of the album isn’t data though. the point of the album is to showcase that you are an artist who takes yourself seriously. here is a large body of work that took time, took care, took love, took an artistic approach to what a lot of people said i shouldn’t do, but i chose to do it because i knew it was right for me. it’s also an opportunity to explore what you’re capable of as an artist. if there’s no album then every song is a single and you’re just writing singles. some of my favourite songs are the songs that never became singles (and never should have). they’re just weird and sometimes i like weird and then i like this artist more because maybe we’re the same weird.
i’ve made 4 albums. i plan to make more.
make albums. make weird.
