Back to University
I’m sitting in a coffee shop back in Vancouver after playing 4 shows in 3 days this weekend. What a whirlwind. I’m pretty exhausted. Not sure if I’m getting older, or if it was actually just an insane travel / show weekend. I think it was more the latter. I’m still young baby! Some quick math for y’all — from Vancouver to Kingston to Alabama and back — a total of 4 train rides, 5 flights, 6 hours of driving and not a lot of sleep. I guess being a BIT tired is warranted.
The pure variety of the shows this week was a real treat, every show felt different. Kingston was a boiler room style party where the crowd was packed around and on the stage. I had a few inches of personal space and that was about it. I like this setup because you can really feel the energy of the crowd with every song you play. It’s a bit of a challenge to cue up the next song when people are in your space, but I’m all for it. It feels punk as fuck. At one point a girl onstage accidentally bumped the tempo slider about 5bpm slower so you have to get used to adjusting to things like that. All part of the fun. The worse my hair at the end of the show, the better the party.
Alabama consisted of a Glass Petals show in Tuscaloosa at a frat, and then we did an after party at a club called Rounders. The south feels pretty different from Canada. We never really had a true frat experience at the university I attended, so an Alabama frat feels as American as you can get. It’s fun to experience someone else’s reality for a weekend. That’s always been an exciting part of traveling to me.
People at the frats constantly ask me “what’s the craziest gig you’ve ever played?” I’m not really sure how to answer that. Sometimes I say Tomorrowland (a crowd pleaser!), sometimes I say an afterparty at a museum in Sweden (unexpected!), and sometimes I say Kenya (cuz what?). As hard as it is to answer, it does make me feel grateful for all the places I’ve been.
We topped off the weekend in Auburn Alabama, with my VJ Cam, some of his buddies, and a fuck-ton of LED gear and lasers to throw a rave in a barn at Sigma Nu. A real barn-burner they say (i think.) Still tired. So fun.
Buc-ees is lit btw.
Hope to see you on the rest of tour.
