first week of tour = complete
4 shows and 1400km’s of driving later, week 1 is complete. thank you to everyone who came out. it’s been a long time since i drove show to show, but i really enjoyed it. no airports, no security, just listening to some tunes while trekking across Ontario. this year i’m trying to develop a healthier relationship with my phone because i fucking hate that thing. this road trip tour hybrid was great for that, there’s no time to look at your phone while driving, no chance to get sucked into the rabbit hole that is social media/internet/youtube/blah blah blah.
while driving, i was thinking a lot about my philosophy for performing and i’ve narrowed it down to two things:
1. growing up i had two types of hockey coaches, the one that would just blow the whistle and make you skate while standing on the ice (not a fan), and two: the coach that would skate with you. i had so much respect for the coach that would skate with us. when i perform, i want to be like that coach, i want to bring an energy level that the crowd feels so that they join in with me. i can’t expect the audience to bring energy if i’m not matching it.
2. there’s a story about the band At The Drive-In that they got signed when they played a show for 13 people. the label’s theory was if the band goes this hard for no one, imagine if the show was busy what they’d be capable of. i love this. i want to give my all, regardless of the show. anyone who bought a ticket deserves the best show i’m capable of giving.
