anatomy of a music video

my new song dancing in a dream with rêve is officially out. i wanted to talk a bit about the music video, how we made it, how i took a bigger directorial roll, and why it was so creatively fulfilling.

i’ve made lots of music videos in the past, with a lot of talented directors, plenty who are just my friends that happen to be talented. i’ve always liked tying a visual to music. i think it’s such an important way to present music. the same way how if a song is in a memorable movie scene, it can change your feeling towards that song forever. i think music videos also have that power.

some people in this industry say it’s sort of pointless to create a music video these days… getting people to watch it can be difficult. but at the end of the day, isn’t that everything? it’s hard to get people to hear music, go to shows, etc. we do these things because they are important to us, and if they come across someone’s radar, even better. for me it’s truly the process that’s more fulfilling than anything else. i wrote out almost every scene, every angle, and every shot for this video, something i’d never done before. i loved it. my friend Kyle co-directed with me, helping me with my lack of camera knowledge, helping me re-create what was in my head.

on thursday morning rêve arrived camera-ready, we picked her up from YVR. we shot at different locations on the way up to Whistler. the squamish lumberjack outside the Chances casino, porteau cove, squamish bluff. we arrived in Whistler and had 10mins to drop-off our stuff before we took a gondola up to the peak for a private event i was DJ’ing. we shot in the gondola, because of course we did. some b-roll at the party of rêve vibing, played the show, headed back down and shot in the pool of the hotel after hours (had to convince the front desk to let us do so with some guest list). next day we shot on a frozen lake that was basically melting beneath us, did the shots in the back of the pickup truck, and then i had my show that night where rêve performed as well. the whole thing done and dusted in 48 hours.

watch the final product here

and i would love if you could leave a comment with your fav scene on the vid :)
