miami and such
i’m currently sitting on the plane flying home to vancouver from miami. i’ve skipped miami music week the last few years what with the pandemic and also some years it just not seeming worth it… so it was good to be back. i think it’s probably my 8 or 9th time, which seems wild in retrospect. it’s a good mix of people, some people who are trying to re-create the “glory days” whatever that means, and most who just kinda adapt and roll with the ebbs and flows of the industry. i’m always a fan of those in the latter camp as the former feels a bit like the high schooler who misses when he was captain of the football team. this shit is all about waves!! we ride ‘em once in awhile, and the people who i respect and admire are in it for the long haul. as am i!!
i did a solid bunch of glass petals gigs which was fun to kind of introduce that project a bit more. a b2b with capozzi at tchami & malaa’s no redemption party, and we had a great set at walker & royce’s RDA event. one of our our best i reckon.
on saturday i had arepas for the first time with my manager, as we discussed the highly unlikely probability of winning the juno i was up for that night (the awards were in halifax). it was a shock to even be nominated. that night a couple mins before i was about to DJ, i received a voice note from Karen harding screaming “we won we won!” also some very kind texts from a few artist friends at the awards who let me know they cheered as loud as possible when they announced my name. i walked over to my manager and label owner at the party and said “congrats guys we just won dance recording of the year.” they said ‘hahaha very funny,’ and then i had to say no… i’m actually serious :)
it’s quite surreal to win an award for anything, it definitely feels good to be recognized but mostly i think it inspires me to keep making stuff i love. the music is always the goal, not the recognition. a career in music feels like a big jigsaw puzzle slowly falling into place, and i don’t think i’ll ever fully understand the full picture till i’m like… fucking 70 maybe? idk. i’m feeling happy though, and excited to just keep putting out more tunes. i got some stuff planned…

ps: i really appreciate all the kind messages everyone sent me about the award. thank u!
