Sunsets, Pastrami and Nightclubs

I’m on a delayed plane from Ft Lauderdale to Denver, and then I’ll continue back to Vancouver. The flight delay is 40mins and my connection is only 1 hour… should be interesting. “Interesting” is my favourite way to describe “possible impending disaster.” I’m sure when someone saw the Jan 6th crowd outside the capitol, they thought, “should be interesting.”

That reference felt apt since I played Washington DC this weekend (as well as Ft. Lauderdale.) Soundcheck DC is a great venue. A sweaty basement with a bumping sound-system where you can tell everyone attending is there for the music. No bullshit and I like that. It makes me love DJ’ing getting to play venues like that.

I’m not sure if audiences understand that when their excitement is palpable, it’s encouraging for DJ's to push things in bolder, uncharted territory. So I thank audiences that give this type of feedback, it’s my favourite place to be as a performer.

Speaking of audience feedback, I recently conducted a poll on my instagram & tiktok, asking people to choose 1 of 3 remixes for my upcoming sunset mix album*. We had 443 votes and here are the final counts:

1. “Wherever” - 123 votes
2. “Too Late” - 168 votes
3. “Old Self” - 152 votes

So looks like this week I will be finishing the remix for Too Late ft. Kroy. It will join the others on a sunset remix album* out end of June. A bit of a time crunch but I’m up to the challenge!

In personal news, I had a fantastic pastrami sandwich at a Jewish deli this morning in Ft. Lauderdale. You know it’s legit if the pickles hit right. On the uber to the airport, I had a conversation with the Haitian driver who complimented my horrific french accent. I’m sure he was being nice, but I still appreciated it coming from a local of a French-speaking country. Because of this interaction I have now deemed my enrolment in French Immersion as "worth it."

This week's plan: start with an easy run Monday morning then full sunset mix mode!

*If you’re unfamiliar with what sunset mixes are. It’s when I remix my own songs in a more melodic, euphoric club version. Sometimes these are more upbeat and sometimes they are more chill. It’s been a great creative outlet to re-imagine a lot of my tunes that I felt needed more love. I also love re-contextualizing lyrics over new chord progressions. Re-arranging the lyric over new chords can give an old song new life.
